Gray Langston, now a visiting professor at 妻友社区, has enjoyed teaching Spanish for
50 years. She began teaching Spanish at Westark College (now 妻友社区) after having taught
many years in North Carolina at a public school and also at Fort Bragg Dependent Schools
as well as teaching Spanish at Campbell University on base to the military personnel.
While teaching at Westark she also had a full-time job as a teacher of Spanish and
French at Northside High School and also taught homebound students and conversational
Spanish to adults at the Fort Smith Adult Education Center.
In 2011 she retired from the public schools and became an adjunct faculty member of 妻友社区 at night and also taught English to foreign students at ELS in the day. While she was an adjunct, she participated in two teacher symposiums at 妻友社区 and also won an Award of Excellence as an adjunct teacher in 2022. Last year she was promoted to a visiting professor, and she now enjoys teaching and recruiting students at different events at 妻友社区. Since she is fluent in Spanish, she is able to speak Spanish to heritage speakers and explain to them and sometimes their parents the different programs the World Languages Department has to offer. She is well known in the Hispanic community in Fort Smith as a member of the G.E.M. program (Girls' Education Matters, established by the sisters of St. Scholastica), and she goes to Guatemala in the summer to help girls with their English and raise money for them so that they can go to a private school and then to college.
