Spanish For the Helping Professions

Combine your passion for language with your drive to improve your writing and communication skills with a Certificate of Proficiency in Spanish for the Helping Professions.

According to the Arkansas Economic Development Institute (AEDI), the Hispanic/Latino population in Arkansas has boomed over the last forty years, increasing from 19,000 in 1990 to over 250,000 in the current decade.  The Certificate of Proficiency in Spanish for the Helping Professions encourages the development and mastery of the language and cultural skills to communicate effectively with Spanish-language clients in professional settings. This 9-credit hour program provides curriculum designed for those in helping professions such as human services, health care organizations, educators, and others. Courses include Intermediate Spanish I, II, and Spanish for the Professions. Beginning Spanish I and II or required placement scores are prerequisites for Intermediate Spanish I.

A CP in Spanish for the Helping Professions increases student marketability in their chosen field, be it business, nursing, or social services.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Spanish for the Helping Professions Certificate of Proficiency, students will be able to:

  • Translate Spanish terms associated with the helping professions orally and in written formats. 
  • Apply working knowledge of Spanish in a variety of helping profession settings. 
  • Compare and contrast mainstream culture with the variety of Hispanic cultures. 
  • Communicate with Spanish-speaking clients with confidence, orally and in writing.
