Chancellor Updates Campus on Homecoming, ‘Spelling Bee,’ Accepted Students

Written By: Terisa Riley

Dear Lions,

It has been a busy and productive two weeks at . We had an amazing Homecoming Week full of campus activities and visits with proud alumni who have a lifelong love for this university. Thanks to everyone who worked hard to make all of the events so successful.

Faculty Senate: This week, the Faculty Senate hosted an open forum where Provost Shadow Robinson, VC Carey Tucker, and I answered questions about faculty salaries, the creation of academic college and department by-laws, strategic planning, use of technology for future student ratings of instruction and promotion portfolios, faculty morale, and other topics of interest. I appreciate having this opportunity to talk with faculty, learn about their concerns, and determine ways to advance as a university.

25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee: Last night, I had a wonderful time serving as a guest “speller” in the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the first performance at since we dedicated the Stacey Jones Season of Entertainment. Please make time to see the show this week or next. It is a delightful, funny, and moving musical, and our faculty and student performers and crew are outstanding. Get your tickets for .

Accepted Student Day: Today, we have hosted hundreds of prospective students at our Prestigious Lion Scholars breakfast and Accepted Student Day event. It was so energizing to see parents and students all over campus today as they learned about majors, organizations, and student success. One future Lion told me she drove by herself from Hot Springs at 4 a.m. just to be sure she made it on time because she was so excited about being here. Others came in from cities all over our region, spent the night in Fort Smith, and explored our town. My thanks to the teams in Admissions, Plant Ops, Student Activities, Financial Aid, Honors College, Student Success, Housing, SSC, and Chartwells for all of the hard work to prepare for and host the event today. Also, thanks to all participants who represented so well at the Majors Exploration fair and student organization fair.

Baseball: I hope to see you at Crowder Field this weekend as the Lions take on Lubbock Christian University on Saturday and Sunday.

State of the City: On Monday, February 27, will host the State of the City Address by Major George McGill. It will be my pleasure to welcome Mayor McGill and our guests back to the campus for this engaging presentation of the past accomplishments, current environment, and future plans of our community. The event which is free and open to the public will begin at 6 p.m. in the Reynolds Room in the Campus Center.

Together we Roar: The annual Mini-conference which provides professional development for faculty and staff will be held on Friday, March 3. I look forward to gathering with staff from 11 a.m.-noon for our Staff Senate meeting, and again from 12:15-3:50 p.m. for our keynote speaker and breakout sessions. These sessions provide excellent opportunities to gain the knowledge needed to support our colleagues and students while investing time in ourselves. My special thanks to Staff Senate and the Division of Student Success for your hard work to plan, implement, and assess this day.

Whether I interact with you at a meeting, open forum, campus event, or during a performance or competition, please know how deeply honored I am to work with and for you. It is my privilege to serve as your chancellor.

Have a great weekend.

Terisa Riley
