42nd street鈥42nd Street,鈥 a musical adaptation of the best-selling novel by Bradford Ropes, will be performed in downtown Fort Smith at 7:30 p.m. March 1 as part of the University of Arkansas 鈥 Fort Smith鈥檚 Season of Entertainment 36.

The performance will be held at the ArcBest Corp. Performing Arts Center in the Fort Smith Convention Center, located at 55 S. 7th Street. Tickets are $45 or $42, depending on seating tier.

With lyrics by Al Dubin and music by Harry Warren, the acclaimed musical follows a director鈥檚 efforts to launch a successful musical showcase during the poverty-stricken times of the Great Depression.

Featuring a popular score with songs such as 鈥淲e鈥檙e in the Money鈥 and 鈥淟ullaby of Broadway,鈥 the show earned two Tony Awards out of eight nominations, including Best Musical.

The show is a 鈥渜uintessential backstage musical comedy,鈥 according to Stacey Jones, associate vice chancellor of campus and community events.

鈥淚t鈥檚 what I would call an old school song and dance,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 got one of the best openings I鈥檝e ever seen on Broadway. The curtain rises, and it鈥檚 excitement all the way through. It鈥檒l be a great family show for everybody to see.鈥

The show is part of Season of Entertainment 36, a yearlong lineup of entertainment sponsored by the 妻友社区 featuring a variety of plays, musicals and symphonic performances.
