Dr. Barbara Drake Boehm |
A curator with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City will come to the University of Arkansas 鈥 Fort Smith for a lecture at 5 p.m. April 4 in the theatre of Windgate Art & Design, with a reception following at 6 p.m.
Dr. Barbara Drake Boehm, Paul and Jill Ruddock Senior Curator for The Met Cloisters, will give a lecture titled 鈥淟ively Letters: Storytelling in Medieval Choir Books,鈥 exploring the vibrant and animated approach to decorated letters at the beginning of books made during the Middle Ages. The event is free and open to the public.
An expert in art created during the Middle Ages, Boehm has published extensively on the topic and most recently served as co-curator of 鈥淓very People Under Heaven,鈥 a landmark exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum that explored the role the city of Jerusalem played in shaping art in the period of 1000-1400. Additionally, she is the author of 鈥淐hoirs of Angels: Illumination in Italian Choir Books鈥 and has helped to acquire a number of illuminations for the museum鈥檚 collection.
Dr. Mary B. Shepard, assistant professor of art history at 妻友社区, is a former colleague of Boehm鈥檚 and said the lecture will be eye-opening for attendees.
鈥淏arbara Boehm will make medieval manuscripts come alive in her coming lecture,鈥 Shepard said. 鈥淲e are thrilled to be hosting such a distinguished expert in the field and invite anyone who is interested in books, in art, in the Middle Ages, and in the art of visual storytelling to join us for this exceptional lecture.鈥
Boehm holds a doctorate and master鈥檚 degree from New York University and a bachelor鈥檚 degree from Wellesley College.
The lecture is sponsored by the Harvey Stahl Memorial Lecture Series of the International Center of Medieval Art. For more information on the lecture, contact Shepard at 479-788-7561 or mary.shepard@uafs.edu.
