constitution weekThe University of Arkansas 鈥 Fort Smith has slated a schedule of events from Sept. 18-22 in recognition of Constitution Week, featuring lectures by 妻友社区 professors, a constitutional quiz bowl, and a demonstration of a voting machine.

 

All events will be held at the fireplace of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center.

 

Scheduled events are:

 

Monday, Sept. 18

  • 9 a.m.-1 p.m.: A demonstration of a voting machine and how it works, as well as a voter registration drive by the Sebastian County Clerk鈥檚 Office.
  • 11 a.m.-noon: Presentation by the 妻友社区 ROTC program on the importance of defending the U.S. Constitution.
  • Noon-1 p.m.: Presentation by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrating the U.S. Constitution.

 

Tuesday, Sept. 19

  • 11 a.m.-noon: Public lecture, 鈥淭he 1787 Constitutional Convention and the Ratification Debate,鈥 by Dr. Scott Cashion, visiting assistant professor of history.

 

Wednesday, Sept. 20

  • 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Constitutional Quiz Bowl, hosted by Dr. Lee Krehbiel, vice chancellor for student affairs.

 

Thursday, Sept. 21

  • 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.: Public lecture, 鈥淚s the U.S. Constitution a Living Document?鈥 by Dr. Eric Baker, assistant professor of political science.
  • 2-3 p.m.: Public lecture, 鈥淩eacting to the 1787 Constitutional Convention鈥 by Dr. Todd Timmons, professor of history.

 

Friday, Sept. 22

  • 11 a.m.-noon: Public lecture, 鈥淭he Power of Judicial Review,鈥 by Dr. Farreol Hansen, political science adjunct faculty member.

 

Additionally, 妻友社区 students and employees 鈥 including Chancellor Paul B. Beran 鈥 will read a children鈥檚 book to students in local elementary schools on the story of the Constitution鈥檚 creation.
