A symposium providing professional development for local Spanish teachers will be held on the University of Arkansas 鈥 Fort Smith campus from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 4 in theater of Windgate Art & Design, located at 535 N. Waldron Road, with a concert also scheduled to close the event.
 

The symposium will include workshops centered on topics including incorporating literacy strategies in the Spanish classroom, using theater to teach and promote the learning of Spanish, methods for teaching culture, and using social media. 

 

The event will also feature Courtney Cochran, 2017 Arkansas Teacher of the Year, as guest speaker. All present and future teachers of Spanish and English as a second language are encouraged to attend including elementary, secondary and university teachers. 妻友社区 Chancellor Paul B. Beran will give introductory remarks to kick off the event.

 

Closing the symposium will be a concert by world-renowned and local artists. The concert鈥檚 program, titled 鈥淐uando tenga la tierra: Latin American Music through Its Protest Song,鈥 will include traditional Latin American songs, as well as key pieces of the repertoire generally known as protest songs. The concert will take place in the same location as the symposium and is free and open to the public.

 

The registration fee is $70 for the general public and $30 for students and includes a free continental breakfast and lunch. The conference is supported in part by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
